The Philips design director came to us stating they want to be leaders in providing a unique kitchen tool multifunctional solution, stretching with novel solutions that cover the food-related tasks at the home journey without compromising on performance and ease of use.

After investigating how people prepare food, store kitchen tools, and consume food, we created a food and compost processor that provides a circular approach to homegrown produce, from food preparation to fertilizer production. My role in this project was to research and concept development, and design interactions through user journey map, benchmark, and product render.

PROBLEM

Preparing food at home is, for most consumers, a need and a challenge. Countertop and storage space are precious, challenging consumers on their choices of tools: substantial trade-offs between usability, convenience, and performance leads to the specialization vs. Versatility dilemma.

Challenge

As Philips, we want to be leaders in providing a unique kitchen tool multifunctional solution, stretching with novel solutions that coverage of the tasks related to food at home journey, without compromising on performances and ease of use.

Scoping The Problem

Moving forward with Philip’s research and insight, we started with researching trends and topics regarding food. We found that food waste is a 1.5 trillion dollar problem and the total wastage for the edible food is 1.3 billion tons per year globally. Especially food waste in the livestock industry is one of the major contributors to global warming. This is one of the reasons the demand for a Plant-based food diet is booming. We discovered that consumers are interested in what urban food production offers to achieve a more plant-based diet lifestyle. Consumers wants healthy nutritious food, know where their food comes from, and how the food production process impacts the environment.

Defining Brief

In result, we found the opportunity to design a multi-purpose food and compost processor that provides a circular approach to homegrown product, from food preparation to fertiliser production.

Our design builds off the existing Philips Viva Collection Food Processor on the market, adding on the cleaning produce accessory and a compost processor. We want to encourage user with homegrown food cycle, green growth, positive environmental impact, and hygiene with food compost.

Research

We investigated on the journey from garden preparation to gardening to food preparation. Then, we decided to focus our design to help user on cleaning produce, food preparation, manage food waste, and fertilising garden.

First we investigated on existed multi-purpose food processors on the market to understand each product's accessories and functions. Then we looked at existed food compost cycler that uses electric dry, grind, cool process, another kind that simply grinds, and others that use the traditional oxidation composting method.
